नवमुखी रुद्राक्ष

नवमुखी रुद्राक्ष भैरव-स्वरूप है। इसे शिव-सायुज्य को प्रदान करनेवाला कहा गया है। यह कपिल (अग्नि-रंग-स्वरूप) तथा मुक्तदायक है अथवा 'कपिलः मुक्तिदः' (महर्षि सगर के साठ हजार पुत्र भस्म हो गए, फिर अनेक प्रार्थना के बाद वे ही कपिल ऋषि कपिल-धारा अर्थात् गंगा के रूप में उन्हें मुक्ति प्रदान करते है। नव-वक्त्र का धारणकर्ता शंकर के समान बलशाली हो जाता है।

लक्षकोटि सहस्र (अर्थात् अगणित) ब्रह्म-हत्या के पापो जो अर्जित करता है, उसको नवमुखी रुद्राक्ष शीघ्र ही पाप-नाश के बाद निष्पाप कर देता है। रुद्राक्षजाबालोपनिषद् के अनुसार नवमुखी रुद्राक्ष में नव शक्तियों का निवास होता है। अतः यह नवशक्ति-प्रतीक बीजाक्ष है। इसके धारण से सभी नौ शक्तियाँ प्रसन्न होती हैं। श्रीमद्देवीभागवत और पद्मपुराण दोनों ही नवमुखी रुद्राक्ष पर भैरव देव का निवास सिद्ध करते हैं। देवलोक में भी नवमुखी रुद्राक्ष सदैव इन्द्र और अन्य देवों द्वारा पूजित होता है। भगवान् शंकर के आश्रम में स्वयं शंकर की तरह पवित्र निवास-स्थल पर यह रुद्राक्ष गणेश की तरह है-ऐसा शास्त्र-वचन है। इसके धारण से भोग और मोक्ष दोनों की प्राप्ति होती है। सहस्र भ्रूण-हत्या और शत ब्रह्म-हत्या के पाप से नवमुखी रुद्राक्ष तत्काल मुक्त करता है। नवमुखी रुद्राक्ष पर यमराज का भी अधिवास शास्त्रोक्त है। इसके धारण से यमराज का भय नहीं रहता। यमराज को काल कहा गया है। भैरव को भी काल-भैरव कहते हैं। नवमुखी रुद्राक्ष के धारण से ये दोनों कालदेव प्रसन्न होते हैं। तत्परिणामतः अकाल-मृत्यु नहीं होती। नवग्रह की बाधाएँ समाप्त होती हैं और नव शक्तियों की ऊर्जा मिलती रहती है। कुछ शास्त्रों में नवमुखी को रुद्र-स्वरूप भी कहा गया है। यह इसलिए भी सत्य है कि भैरव (काल-भैरव) और यमराज (काल) दोनों ही शिव के महत्त्वपूर्ण शासनांग है।
